Types & Categorization of Burns
Burns are categorized based on type, severity, and extent. Generally speaking, first-degree burns that cover less than 10 percent of the body are considered mild, whereas second- or third-degree burns covering anywhere from 10-20 percent of the body or more are categorized as moderate or major.
The different types of burns include:
- First-Degree Burns: Affect only the top layer of skin (epidermis)
- Second-Degree Burns: Affect the epidermis and dermis (lower layer of skin)
- Third-Degree Burns: Affect both the epidermis and dermis, as well as tissue and bone
Regardless of the type, all burns are painful and can cause redness, swelling, blistering, and scarring. Third-degree burns are generally the most serious, as they can result in severe infection, complications, and death.
How Are Burns Treated?
Burns are treated differently depending on the type and severity of the burn. First-degree burns typically only need at-home treatment, such as the application of a topical ointment or antibiotic cream. More serious burns, however, will require treatment from a medical professional. Prescription creams are often used to treat moderate burns, while third-degree burns may require intensive care. Victims of major burns often receive intravenous (IV) antibiotics, skin grafts, surgery, and other similar treatments.
The cost of treatment for catastrophic burns can be immense. If your injuries or the injuries of your loved one were caused by another person, company, or entity’s negligent actions, you should not have to suffer the aftermath on your own. The Mellino Law Firm can help you fight for the maximum recovery you are owed.
Why Contact The Mellino Law Firm?

Led by our founding attorney, Chris Mellino, we have successfully recovered millions of dollars on behalf of our clients. We have also made it our mission to hold negligent parties accountable for the harm they cause.
