Monsanto Ordered to Pay $80M to Plaintiff in Roundup Weed Killer Cancer Case April 2, 2019.

A federal jury in San Francisco has awarded Ed Hardeman $80 million in damages for his lawsuit filed against Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup weed killer. In his complaint, he stated that regular use of the product caused him to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. Throughout the case’s progression, it was also claimed that Monsanto knew a key ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, was likely carcinogenic but did not do anything to warn consumers.

In the first phase of the trial, the jury did find that Roundup and its glyphosate-based composition was a "substantial factor" in his cancer. The same jury recently determined Monsanto owed him more than $5 million in compensatory damages and another $75 million in punitive damages.

Bayer, the parent company of Monsanto, still insists that Roundup is not carcinogenic and not dangerous when used normally, even across decades as Hardeman had. The company has announced it will appeal the $80 million jury verdict. It also went on the offensive by saying that every other pending Roundup weed killer lawsuit was not technically strengthened by the verdict because each case has to be taken on its own merit.

Back in August, Monsanto lost another Roundup weed killer lawsuit filed by another California man. In that historic case, the jury awarded the plaintiff nearly $290 million, but that amount was later reduced by a judge to $78 million.
