Causes

WebMD states there are more than 100 types of nerve damage, including compression or trauma.

Where medical negligence is concerned, the two most common errors that cause injury are physical damage inflicted with a surgical instrument and anesthesia mistakes that block sufficient blood flow during the operation.

Physical nerve damage occurs when a major nerve is mishandled, stretched, burnt or severed during a procedure. This damage can interfere with the nerve’s ability to transmit and receive signals from the rest of the body, and, if not addressed, it can form a painful nerve scar known as a neuroma.

Anesthesia mistakes can occur when administered locally or regionally, such as in the case of a spinal epidural. Read more.

Symptoms

A surgical error may affect the autonomic nerves, which control involuntary activities such as heart rate and digestion, motor nerves, which control movement, sensory nerves, which allow you to feel pain and touch, or a combination thereof.

Autonomic nerve damage can cause:

  • hyperhidrosis (sweating too much) or anhidrosis (not sweating enough)
  • dizziness
  • dry eyes and mouth
  • bladder impairment and/or constipation
  • sexual dysfunction

Motor nerve damage can cause:

  • weakness
  • atrophy
  • twitching
  • paralysis

Sensory nerve damage can cause numbness, a "pins-and-needles" feeling, pain, sensitivity, tingling, burning, and/or difficulty with balance.
