September 19, 2014, SF Gate and other news sources reported that many women are undergoing unnecessary surgery to remove ovarian tumors.
"The fear of ovarian cancer drives many patients and their doctors into immediate surgery when it may be advisable to wait several weeks or a few months to see if the mass shrinks or goes away on its own," Kaiser Permanente researchers told reporters.
Earlier in the month, Fox News reported that a 68-year-old woman filed an unnecessary surgery lawsuit against her hospital after having part of her rectum removed in January. The hospital apologized for mixing up her lab results with someone else and misdiagnosing her, but it has not yet handed over her medical records, which, the patient told WFTV, will show that she underwent four unnecessary procedures.
Misdiagnosis is one of the more common reasons that a patient undergoes needless surgery. In such a case, not only is the patient put through a procedure that wasn’t required, he or she may suffer further injury or a delay in treatment for the true condition.
Patients often file a surgical malpractice lawsuit after being injured during gastric bypass, hysterectomy, and back surgery.
